Star Alliance is the third largest global travel alliance. SkyTeam, which includes Aeromexico, Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines among its members, has a larger network than Star Alliance. Oneworld connects American Airlines and British Airways with Iberia Airlines (Spain), Japan Airlines (Japan) and LATAM Airlines Group (Brazil).
The alliances are important because they allow airlines to coordinate schedules and pricing on a global scale. The partnerships also mean passengers can count on having the same frequent-flier program when they travel between member airlines.

The alliance began in 1997 as a merger between two smaller alliances -- the United Airlines-led SkyTeam and Scandinavian Airlines System's SAS Group. This gave Star Alliance 30 members at its inception, including Air Canada, Lufthansa, Thai Airways International and Singapore Airlines.
The following year saw membership increase to 38 carriers as Air China joined the fold and Ethiopian Airlines became an associate member. In 1999 Korean Air Lines Co., Austrian Airlines AG and Mexicana de Aviacion SAB de CV joined up with Star Alliance while EgyptAir raised its status from associate member to full member status by 2000.

The first major expansion came in 2005 when it absorbed the former Air Canada affiliate Canadian Airlines International, which was merged into Air Canada's low-cost subsidiary Air Canada Jazz.
In 2011, Star Alliance announced its second major expansion, adding South African Airways and Air India to its roster of member airlines. The following year it added Turkish Airlines as well as Avianca from Colombia, marking the first time that an airline from Latin America joined an international alliance.[3]
